The Maker’s Mark Secretariat Center is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) grant for 2014! The mission of the TCA is to provide a better life for Thoroughbreds, both during and after their racing careers by supporting rescue, retirement and research and by helping the people who work with them. TCA is a charitable 501(c) (3) organization which follows a "United Way" methodology, providing the Thoroughbred industry and its supporters a way to give to one organization while helping many. Over the past 23 years TCA has provided nearly $20 million grants to more than 200 Thoroughbred-related organizations.
The four types of organizations that TCA supports include:
Thoroughbred rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, adoption, and retirement
Backstretch and farm employee programs
Therapeutic riding programs that utilize Thoroughbreds
The MMSC has been a lucky recipient of TCA’s generosity for many years. This year the MMSC will use the grant to help pay for feed.
“We have limited paddock space, and our paddocks are heavily traversed,” said MMSC director Susanna Thomas. “Therefore we rely on a low starch balanced feed replete with minerals and trace elements, ideally one with probiotics to provide the necessary nutrients for our horses, some of which have been highly stressed or are young, or both. This type of feed can be expensive. But we know as we have done feed comparison trials, that it is the best thing for our horses. We are so grateful, therefore, to have TCA support us yet again, so that we can give our horses the solid nutrition they need to get them started on the “right foot” (and by that I mean a healthy one too!) in their change of career! Thank you TCA!”
